Gather round for today’s Cliché Quiz.
What do the following ten songs have in common?
I’ll give you a hint: let’s start by singing the chorus lines one by one.
1. Nelly Furtado: Say it Right
"OH YOU DON’T MEAN.. NOTHING AT ALL to me”
2. Collective Soul: The world I know
“Cause it’s the WORLD I KNOW / It’s the WORLD I KNOW”
3. 30 Seconds to Mars: From Yesterday
“From YESTERDAY”
4. U2: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
“But I still HAVEN’T FOUND”
5. Avril Lavigne: Sk8r Boi
“He was a SK8R BOI…”
6. Alanis Morisette: Ironic
“It’s like RAIN on your wedding day”
7. Glenn Frey: You Belong to the City
“YOU BELONG TO THE CIty”
8. Mike & the Mechanics: All I Need is a Miracle
“All I need is a MIRACLE”
9. Westlife: Nothing is Impossible
“No matter what they SAY”
10. Mel C: If That Were Me
“How DID YOU FALL?”
ANSWER:
If you answered
“Holy f&*k they’ve all got the same hook in the chorus melody”
then you would be absolutely correct! Congratulations!

could be a catchy lyrical line ("all day I dream about sex")
a smokin' riff (e.g. the one that kids play in guitar shops)
a magical motif (e.g. the intro to 'Grace')
or anything, really ("Give it to me baby, Uh-huh uh-huh!")
If you can't pick out the hook, it's usually because the song is either so unreal that everything hooks, or so crap that it doesn't have any point of interest that distinguishes it from anything.
Happy hooking!
